ISA Global Engagement Committee’s Mission:
The mission of the Global Engagement Committee is to cultivate a sense of awareness in global current events and issues and to foster a commitment to global citizenship. The Global Engagement committee strives to empower both ISA members and the broader Northwestern community to think, question, participate and become agents of sustainable change, whether abroad or in the US. Through dinner discussions, global events in the news posted in ISA’s weekly newsletter, and a spring break service trip, the Global Engagement Committee provides a means for students to learn, discuss and engage in events occurring all over the world.
Chair:
Alexis Tubb
Alexis Tubb was born in Takapuna, New Zealand, then moved to Sydney, Australia at age 5, and to Colorado, USA at age 10. She spent 10 months of her junior year abroad – researching, studying, and backpacking throughout South America. Her American parentage and accent sometimes confuse ISA members, but show her some Foster’s beer and the Rugby World Cup and she’ll remember where her true origins lie. Alexis is a senior studying Environmental Science and International Studies. She founded ISA’s international spring break trip to Peru to build a community center in 2010. She hopes to build a career in implementing economically competitive renewable energy options in developing countries as an alternative to fossil fuels.
Committee:
Bruno Rogerio
“Bruno Carvalho Lopes Rogério, was born and raised in São Paulo, Brazil. He is 21 years old and is an exchange student majoring in Economics in his senior year. He is currently involved with Global Engagement, Comedy Forum and Political Union. On his free time, Bruno enjoys reading, watching TV and going to the movies.”
Bruno Peynetti Velasquez
Bruno Peynetti was born in Mexico City, where he lived for 15 years before moving to Geneva, Switzerland. Bruno is a freshman at McCormick with an undecided major, planning to double major in Economics or Political Science. Bruno loves learning languages, cooking, and traveling around the world. He has an obsession with world geography and random international facts. Outside of ISA, he is involved in NUMUN, lighting in a theatre production, and spends quality time at the library just like most engineering students. Give him Swiss chocolate, cheese, or Mexican food and you will make him happy. His dream is to visit 100 countries before the year 2040.
Kate Ma
Zhuoqun (Kate) Ma is a current student at Northwestern University with majors in LOC (Learning and Organizational Change) and Economics. She was born and brought up in Shanghai, China. After moving to a new city, Chicago, she became eager to learn the similarities and the differences between two cities especially in the arena of social justice and non-profit organizations. As she has a special interest in consulting and non-profit management, she is determined to combine these two areas together and be a consultant to nonprofits. She also loves outdoor activities, reading columns, playing the piano and running MARATHON!!! At NU, she is actively engaged in different student groups and is excited to be one of the ISA Global Engagement Committee members! Fun Fact about me: I hate when people scratch the chalkboard. It makes painful noise!!
Lara Saldanha
Lara Saldanha doesn’t know where she’s from since she was born in Japan, is of Indian origin, lived in the United States for ten years, and also lived in the Philippines, Singapore, and Geneva, Switzerland most recently. A freshman piano performance major in Bienen and undecided in Weinberg, Lara loves to sing, read, run if she’s not feeling particularly lazy, play the piano, eat spicy ethnic food, travel, sleep, watch movies with friends, go hiking, eat sinful amounts of Swiss chocolate, and write stuff, but only when the Muses are cooperating (so almost never). Besides the ISA, Lara is also involved in the UpBeat program, various choral organizations, NU Asian, and the Northwestern Running Club.
Michelle Ki
Michelle was born in South Korea but, at the delicate age of 7.5 years, moved to the US where she first lived in Memphis. She now lives in St. Louis when she’s not at NU where she is a sophomore this year in the School of Education and Social Policy. She is currently pursuing a degree in Social Policy; however, she is on the hunt for a possible second major. When she’s not doing homework or attending meetings for GES, AAIV, or ASB, she can be found playing and laughing with her friends, mostly in her apartment or at the lakefill. Michelle used to like to read but now she spends most of her time hanging out with good friends, dreaming of exotic places where she wants to be, and eating random foods. Michelle also has an unhealthy obsession with sour gummy worms, sour patch watermelons, boba, cupcakes, and mangoes. When she graduates, she wants to live abroad and help save the world.
Eric Zhang
Yi Zhang(Eric) was born and raised in Shanghai, China. He’s a sophomore majoring in Electrical Engineering, and also planning to double major in Economics. Eric loves hanging out with friends, playing bamboo flute and playing 2K11 and FIFA, which are the only two video games he good at. And this kid is crazy about food, especially Chinese and Japanese cuisine. Chinese hot pot and sashimi are his all time favorites. Other than academics, he utilizes his engineering ability for a wind turbine project in ESW, and also devotes himself to volunteering. Recently he found his true passion in logic circuit and wants to be the next Steve Jobs.
